Re:Problem with pismo - 2008/03/11 13:48 Can you just tell me...would this work

Western Digital 120GB 2.5" Scorpio IDE Hard Drive
IDE (PATA) Interface • 5400rpm • 9.5mm Height

OR would this one be better

Re:Problem with pismo - 2008/03/11 14:53 Like I said, we in the computing trades just added the "P" to "ATA" to distinguish it from "SATA." If you see any of these terms referencing a drive, it's most likely the right one for the Pismo or any other notebook out before '06:

PATA
(Ultra) ATA/n (where n=maximum burst transfer rate, for instance ATA/100)
(Ultra) ATA-x (where x= transfer mode number, similar to the above. Higher is faster)
IDE (older term for ATA drives)
EIDE (same as above)

This being said, the Pismo uses an ATA/66 (aka ATA-4) controller bus. Any hard drive meeting this spec or better will work.

120 GB is fine. Both of the drives you list are from the same vendor and should thus have similar features. As posted in my prior reply, this is as large a drive as the system will permit on its own.

You might also be interested to learn that your Pismo can accommodate up to 1 GB of RAM if the system firmware has been updated to 4.1.8 . Should you be running OS X, this could come in handy.

Either drive would be fine but....

The 8MB buffer makes a performance difference over other drives with less buffer.

The 120GB drive probably has 2MB if it's not listed in the description so the 80GB drive will give better performance. And if you do not need the extra 40GB of storage there's no reason to get a larger drive.

Seagate drives have a 5 year warranty compared to a 3 year warranty most drives have. I can't say if one brand is really any better than another but the extra 2 years is nice to have.
