Love It. Definitely Revolutionary - 2008/03/02 17:55
I think the mba is one step closer to the world of computing and all wireless.
Here are a few of my likes/dislikes about the mba:
1. No Optical
About Time. It takes up space it's pointless. No one uses disks anymore. Everything is easily uploaded to online storage or backed up to hard storage. I mean come on people. 38% of teens bought audio CDs this year. Most is downloaded directly off the internet And now movies are becoming digital downloads and rentals. All files are easily moved using email, bluetooth, online storage, etc. Also most smaller games and all software is downloadable online. Soon everything we'll be purchased and downloaded right to the computer. The only thing needed is a combination of larger storage space and faster internet connections on the device. both of which are always improving.
I'll admit sometimes optical drives are needed. after all we are not quite to the point where they are obsolete. but that's because no one's ditching them. this is a good first step.
2. No Wired Internet Connection. 'bout time. who spends $1800+ on a laptop and uses a cord? wtf?
3. Only one USB port. I'll admit that's a little disappointing. But... It's meant to be portable and wireless. Not very many people are going to sit on a bus, plane, in the car or watching a baseball game with a billion wires connected to their lap. not to mention the battery on this thing sucks (averaging about 2.5 hr normal use with wireless) All those connections would wear it down quicker. i'll admit 2 would be better.. BUT... once again apple's moving forward to a completely wireless future. Most phone's have bluetooth. Odds are iPods will soon come bluetooth equipped Headphones are now becoming bluetooth. Microphones are starting. Printers run on bluetooth or wifi. some scanners do. Cameras are starting to include bluetooth as well. Anything else or older electronics can still use the 1 port. and you can always hook up a hub to add an extra 3. So over all no complaint. and what's with fire wire. no one really uses it. especially in a laptop. isight is no longer needed and ipod's don't support it.. so it's pointless. as for media cards. meh.. who needs em. i hardly ever use my card reader. i just connect to my phone with bluetooth and use it. then i dont need to remove the card. and it's wireless.
3.Multi touch and backlight! SWEET Although i'm disappointed in the black keyboard. they could make it look a little more chic 4. LED screen Nice move. Brighter too. Dead pixels will be the only issue. no biggie.
5. Built in battery. Who cares. plug it in. Airplanes, cars, buildings they have these things called power outlets.
A spare would be nice but it would take up more room to make the battery removable and look stupid. apple's about style. and no they're not going to steal your data when you send it in for a replacement. apple could care less about your life.
6. HD size. kinda small but it will improve. I'm disappointed in the ssd... not worth the money. but ssd is the way of the future. eventually it will be the best.
Overall. I think the macbook air is futuristic and a good computer. however it depends on a persons needs and budget when it comes to purchasing. if you have a main computer and have 2000 lying around it's a nice portable tool to own.
