Find best results to use install CD, boot holding down C, go to Disk Utility, and select zero the drive, remembering to opt for OS 9 drivers to be installed.

Then if large enough (say 20G or larger, partition whilst in Disk Utility with say 5GB and 15 GB partitions, installing OS X on larger and OS 9.2.2 on smaller.

If the Imac has the standard HDD of about 9G, to 350 slot loader model, might well be too small to partition.
