HD upgrade for my 9600/233 - 2006/05/25 19:32 Ok guys .I have bitten the bullet and decided to upgrade my trusty old 9600/233. I have been using it mostly as a print server to run my HP 2500CP plotter printing clients plans under OS9 but I want to use it now on OS 10.2. I have a Sonnet G4/400 processor ready to go in as well as an Adaptec 39160 ultra SCSI card and a Seagate 73 Gig 10,000 RPM HD to store media such as photos and plans ( all either given to me or bought cheaply ).I already have close to 700 Mb of RAM so everything should coexist well. Will the stock standard 4 Gig SCSI HD ( 25 pin I think) be large enough to run OS 10.2 as well as be fast enough or should I junk it and get a bootable card like a 50 pin Apple/Adaptec 2930CU ( $20 on ebay ) and a larger 9 or 18 Gig HD ? This is an old machine that I don't want to spend megabucks on. Any advice gladly accepted. Cheers , Stewie.

4 Gig should be fine for OSX.

The internal SCSI is 50 pines already, no need for other card I´ve got my 9600 working fine with 384 mb of ram a flashed voodoo 3 card, (two monitors) a 18gb Ibm 80pines hd with an adapter to 50pines, two 4gb 50pines hd a g3 400 upgrade, an USB inetrnal pci card (which is not recognized under MacOs 9.2), and it is running both macOs 9.2 and MacOs X 10.3.9 thanks to XPostFacto.
I´ve been told that the vodoo card would not work under tiger but it does.
I hope this helps...
good luck

Re:HD upgrade for my 9600/233 - 2006/06/18 01:55 How does your HP connect to your Mac ?

OS X will be ok on a 4GB drive without many apps but there may be an issue if your printer is running off a serial port using OS X. But you can get USB to serial adapters that are OS X compatible. You would have to add a USB card but that's cheap.

Re:HD upgrade for my 9600/233 - 2006/06/19 20:20 KrowM At the moment the HP 2500 CP is connected via a serial cable plugged into the printer port and with Appletalk enabled . This is all under OS 9 so when I change to OS X.2 I will hitch it up to an ethernet hub that I have and connect it via ethernet. This will kind of negate the 9600 because I already have my MDD that I do the plans on connected to the hub so I could simply plug the plotter into this and print direct to it but it gives me a few more options. It is also faster printing over ethernet I have been led to believe as well according to some posts I have read on the HP site.

Re:HD upgrade for my 9600/233 - 2006/06/19 20:31 dannur Thanks for the info, Good to see this setup works for you. These are great machines and it is amazing the number I have seen over the years that are in a back room still earning their keep as file / print / music servers / backup machines etc . They rarely break down , are easy to work on and last forever. Stewie
