Re:PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2008/01/03 10:55 Would not the fact that it does restart from the Mac OS 8.5 CD preclude the possibility of the problem being in the hard drive?
I had bought all the RAM (6 x 128MB sticks) new from RamDirect so I'm thinking it is probably OK but maybe not. When I ran from the TechTool Pro 3 CD I used the MultiTester so I believe the RAM was checked out too and everything did pass.
Anyway, I just dropped the machine off at an Apple Authorized repair center up in Vero (Fla.) called Autobahn Communications, Inc. I've dealt with them before and they are very professional and charge reasonable rates.
I'll let you know what they find.

Thank you again krowmagnum,
Carl

Re:PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2008/01/03 17:37 That's probably a good idea since it could be a number of things causing the problem, and swapping out parts to find a bad part does not always work unless you have a spare logic board and everything else.

I was just in Vero today. I'm just up the coast from you in Palm Bay. Small world....

Re:PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2008/01/14 14:08 As it turns out, that is what it needs: a logic board, according to Michael at Autobahn. So I took my 8600 (it works fine but is kind of junky) to them (he said that the logic board in it would work fine) for a transplant since the 9600 is in such nice shape and is a better machine.
I should know in a couple of days how it all works out. Will keep you posted.

Sounds like a good solution since your 8600 is in rough condition and as far as I know those boards are exactly the same.

You should be able to find a replacement board fairly cheap on LowEndMac's Google Group "LEMSwap". I would guess you can find one for $10 +/- plus shipping costs by placing a wanted ad on the list. eBay is another option. I may even have one lying around. I know i have a PSU for an 8600 so I think I also still have the board and I'll give it away since it's untested. You pay shipping or come get it. I'll look for it tomorrow.

And G3 upgrades are cheap for those Macs too. I have found 300MHz + G3 Upgrade cards for $10 or less + shipping and it makes a noticeable difference for the money in old 603 CPU Macs like yours. It's an easy install too (once you get into the case) I have a nice Sonnet 266MHz G3 card that I am not using if interested. email me at krowmagnum at gmail dot com if interested in parts.

Re:PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2008/01/15 07:28 But actually, the logic boards of the 8600 and the 9600 are not the same, are they? Since the 8600 has only three PCI slots to the 9600's six. Also, the 8600's RAM maxes out at 1GB compared to the 9600's 1.5GB?
I'm thinking too, that it would be better to just get a 9600 logic board and save tearing into the 8600. I didn't realize that logic boards were that inexpensive and available.
I am going to call Autobahn this morning and ask them to hold off until I get another 9600 logic board since Michael won't be back to work on the machine until later today anyway.
I have already bought a new Sonnet Crescendo/PCI G3 500MHz for $49. And I understand from System 7 Today's web site that it is compatible with Mac OS 7.6.1 so I think I'll try that.
I am really enjoying all of this immensely!

Thank you!

Sorry for the wrong information, I must have been having a brain cramp or it was really late when I wrote that. I was thinking of the 85/8600 and 95/9600 boards being basically the same, not the 8500 & 9500 or the 8600 & 9600. It's been a few years since I played with these and I'm getting older ;-)

The board I have is a 12 RAM slot board with the Apple Part No. 820-0563-B for a PowerMac 9500.

I remembered another thing because you have a 300MHz + CPU There is an difference with the 300MHz + 603e CPU PowerMacs that use the Mach V board and they are not interchangeable with the earlier PPC boards using the OEM CPU. Using the Sonnet G3 it shouldn't matter though, if it works on the Mach V board it will work on the earlier Kansas board. Not all G3 upgrades will work in the Mach V board. So if you plan on using a Mach V compatible G3 upgrade either board should work because the footprint of the boards are identical.
