PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2007/12/31 12:25Happy New Year to all! I have a really nice condition 9600/350 I picked up on eBay that seems fine except for one thing. Whenever I wake it or restart it the monitor does not re-iluminate. The machine sounds like it's running but I have no screen so I can't communicate with it. My only option is to shut the machine off. From a cold boot everything works fine. Tried installing a new OS (8.6)-no help. The monitor is an IBM small screen CRT that works OK on other machines. Could it be a bad video card? Thank you for any suggestions.

First thing I would do is reset PRAM (hold down command/option/P/R on restart) and it's probably due to replace the PRAM battery on the logicboard. Let the PRAM reset go through a few restarts and that may clear up the problem. If not, let us know what happened, if amything.
And what kind of video card is in the 9600 ?

Re:PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2008/01/01 19:59I did replace the PRAM battery a while back. It was subsequently shut down and unplugged. When I started up again date and time are OK. I took your advice and reset the PRAM several times using the keyboard command and using TechTool Pro 3, all to no avail. One correction: it does wake from sleep fine; it is only when I restart that the monitor does not come back. The video card is: IX-Micro Twin Turbo 128 (ASP says: IMS,tt128mb8A). I also have an 8600/300 that I tried with the same monitor etc. and it restarts with no problems.

Have you tried the card in the 8600 ? (I still think the video card is ok)
If you haven't had the card out I would also try to reseat the video card to make sure it's not loose from shipping.

You could also try the card is a different PCI slot. Sometimes in similar boards they work better in the top slot and sometimes work better in the bottom slot.
I have some PCI video cards listed on my eBay auctions usually so if you are looking for a replacement I have several to choose from (ATI & iXmicro) and my eBay ID is macs2much.

Re:PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2008/01/03 07:11It is only on a restart when I have the problem and whether I am restarting from the hard drive or from the Mac OS 8.5 CD, makes no difference. As per your advice krowmagnum I tried reseating the video card in the same slot and in another slot-no help. And when I tried the video card in the 8600 everything worked fine so I guess you're right about the problem not being the video card. Any other ideas? Power supply? The power switch itself? Bad RAM? I already tried a different monitor-no go.

Re:PowerMac 9600/monitor problem - 2008/01/03 10:33My guess is there is a problem with either the RAM or the hard drive. More likely the RAM.
Since you put a new OS install on the hard drive any problems with the drive would possibly have been identified so I would use GaugePro Or TechTool Pro to check the RAM thoroughly. Or you could pull one stick of RAM at a time until the restart problem goes away. hopefully ;-)
