mac mini boot problems - 2007/12/17 19:20 hey all, recently agreed to work on my sister's mac mini for her. She said she's been getting an error on start up that says she needs to restart her computer. When I took it home, sure enough, it gave me a warning to restart or hold down the power key for several seconds, in several different languages. The strange thing was getting the warning before the machine began to load the OS. The warning comes after seeing the grey screen with the apple icon, but before the system starts to load. I put diskwarrior in and attempted to load from the cd, but to no avail, and I can't get the disk out now, using the eject key or command-e. Iknow the disk is fine(used about 2 weeks ago), so i was wondering if this is a hardware problem. She told me she had been playing around on lime wire(idiot!), so I automatically thought a bug or virus, but now I'm not so sure. Any thoughts?

Re:mac mini boot problems - 2007/12/17 21:42 It's a kernel panic that you're experiencing. It's usually associated with some sort of hardware issue. Have you installed new RAM recently? Or do you have a new keyboard or any other USB peripheral attached? If there's no peripheral attached besides a keyboard and mouse, and you haven't installed any new RAM, then it must be something internal. If the machine is still under warranty, I'd send it in.

Re:mac mini boot problems - 2007/12/17 23:25 Playing with Limewire won't do anything to the Mini. It's not a PeeCee.
Unless of course it's running Windoze which is kind of defeating the purpose of the Mac.

I agree with Caciado that the RAM is the usual suspect for a kernel panic. I would run Rember memory tester on it to make sure the RAM is ok.

I would also try the hardware test disk that came with the Mac.

The Mac is going through a hardware self-test before the OS loads and that is when you are getting the kernel panic. Which means there is a hardware issue somewhere.

Re:mac mini boot problems - 2007/12/17 23:38 I'd have suggested Rember and the test CD, but apparently the poor thing won't boot at all without panicking, and has the DW CD stuck in it on top of it all. Since it's a mini it would be difficult to get in there to remove the RAM and put in another stick just to see if that's what's causing the problem.
