Re:Apple Cinema 20" LCD Monitor-problems - 2007/10/21 06:07 Dear Mac users,
Well despite my bravado of saying I would sign up with Paypal ,I ended up having a friend who did have Paypal membership to purchase on my behalf.
I'm just a wimp!
The CCFL units arrived as a set of three,as expected, although despite the PDF instruction stating that a set of three were all that needed to replace all the backlighting tubes, not correct.
The ADC Apple Cinema 20" LCD uses two (2) sets of three, one set at the top of the screen and of coarse the other set of the bottom of the screen.
I suppose someone has to be paid for goods sent from the US to Australia although I thought the final cost of $70.00 AU was steep when considering the purchase cost of $48.00.
Mind you the cost of travelling to the US and bringing them back myself would have been way more the $22.00AU,so must not complain.
I would suspect that as the top set are always exposed to all the convected heat from the lower as well and would therefore fail first.
The exercise of following the PDF instructions seemed fairly straight forward and without too many complications or so I thought!
The step by step illustrations were very accurate and wording also very precise.
I encounted the odd problem along the way such as the silicone rubber end caps proving so very stubborn and refusing to budge despite all my pushing and shoving back and forward, this I believe was due to the effect of heat build up coursing the rubber firmly adhering to the body of the reflector housing, determination proved the final winner.
Next were the silicone end caps themselves and ,as the instruction explained, poking around the end of each CCFL tube finally released the cap.
The instruction/cautionary note did indicate that soldering would be necessary as the original tubes were crimped/joined with tiny brass wire joiners.
I opted for crimped brass connectors, in the belief that soldered joins in positions of high heat would be not up to the task, although thing as I'm typing this I'm sure I could have seceeded with soldering because of the protection of the silicone end caps.
The brass joiners were a bit fiddly to make although were so successful and I was pleased to have kept to the original method of joining.
All the work was carried out while wearing rubber gloves to avoid any static issues, but I had to take them, off often because my hands got so wet with sweat.
When all connectors were reconnected the illustrations were a good reference for double checking all the reassembly, and my confidence as well.
When all assembly work was completed and monitor to mac connected the most rewarding moment was pressing the button on the front of the screen and getting that welcoming start up sound and the LCD screen lighting up as it should.
The added bonus for the confidence was the diagnostic light not flashing but glowing strongly.
So its back to work for the mac and I and with a strong sense of achievement.
Many thanks to everyone from everymac who offered advice and especially harryb for your dedication and assistance.
