Discussion Q&A - MacBook Decision? - 2006/06/05 01:51 Now that the new forums have been launched, EveryMac.com is pleased to introduce a new feature for the Today's Q&A. Each Monday, EveryMac.com will present a "Discussion Q&A", an opinion question that invites you to share your thoughts with other readers.

Here's the first one:

With the release of the MacBook, Apple decided to consolidate the 12" and 14" iBook and 12" PowerBook G4 models into a single form factor with a 13" display. Now that the dust has settled on this decision, what do you think about the move? Are you thrilled and view the MacBook as a "best of both worlds" solution? Or are you disappointed and wish that Apple would offer a smaller notebook system as well? Why or why not?

Re:Discussion Q&A - MacBook Decision? - 2006/06/05 02:43 Cool. I like the MacBook, specially the black one, but do wish there was a smaller one, was hoping for something like the 12 inch PowerBook but thinner. 13 might be too big.

Re:Discussion Q&A - MacBook Decision? - 2006/06/05 09:27 I thought the MacBook looked too big when I saw it in photos, and wished it was smaller, but after
using one for a week, I really like the bigger/highresolution screen and think it is a good trade off
between size and function. Two thumbs up! - Mike

Re:Discussion Q&A - MacBook Decision? - 2006/06/05 15:41 i dont have a problem with the size of the macbook (i like it), but i do have a problem with the complete and total lack of choice. before you could have a powerfull small mac or cheaper small mac or a larger cheap mac, and now you have one choice. i dont want a macbook pro because they are too big and cost too much but i do want a notebook mac that can play games. there needs to be a macbook with a real graphics card. i would pay 300 more han the white one if apple put a real graphics card in the black one.

Re:Discussion Q&A - MacBook Decision? - 2006/06/05 21:54 Like Scott, I feel the Intel graphics processor is a let down and would have preferred to pay more for one with an ATI or NVIDIA chip at least for the better models. At least they didn't use the Solo chip like the mini!! The size of the MacBook is fine though, smaller laptops -- like the little Sony ones -- look great until you try to use one. I can't type on the little keys on those laptops.

Re:Discussion Q&A - MacBook Decision? - 2006/06/09 14:09 I've had my White 2.0 MacBook for about a week. It is a pleasure to use; a good balance between useability, power, and portability. WiFi reception is great, screen is very good (except in bright sunlight), and with a gig of RAM, works without a lotta spinning beachball nonsense.

Heat? Not much of a problem for me. I've yet to hear the fans kick in much, and I regularly run the batteries down into the teen percentages. Consequently, it is a very quiet machine!

Battery is very good - almost five hours, depending on use. I have an old copy of M$ Office X I use, under Rosetta, of course, and it actually runs faster than my old dual 1 Gig G4. Other, Apple branded, Universal apps are VERY fast, although I haven't tried rendering any movies, yet.

As a poster above mentioned, this is a good balance between functionality and portability - portability was very important to me in this purchase. I don't feel that I gave up a lot of functionality to get the smaller form factor - yet the screen is very readable, and the keyboard is fantastic for my larger, clumsy fingers!

Don't do games - so the graphics processor issue doesn't bother much.

All in all, this is a great consumer 'Book - I recommend it to everyone I talk to about Macs.
