Re:max out my 6500? - 2007/03/02 11:13 it's pretty much stock. there's 96meg ram, and i dropped in an ethernet card back in '05 when i thought i was going to go dsl. don't remember right now if it's the farallon commII card or a pci, but i doesn't matter because i expect i'll be surfing via bluetooth connection in future (and if need be, i'll try and source the commII card).

i'm wondering where the threshold is upgrade-wise. at what point does an upgrade cease to add any new benefit because it eclipses capabilities of the machine's architecture or precessor? for example, i've seen some material about the voodoo 4/5 and radeon 7000 cards in these machines. would more recent, even more powerful cards (assuming compability), provide an additional boost? also, i've seen nothing about nvidia cards?

well, i think you see where i'm going. right now, i'm assuming i'd fill the tv slot and the pci slots. does a pci chassis make any sense? what would i put in it?

thanks again.

Re:max out my 6500? - 2007/03/02 22:43 I always liked the 64/6500 Macs even though they can be a pain to take apart. Here's what I have in the 6400 I have.

First I would put a Sonnet G3 card in it. They are getting cheap now on eBay (some for $20-30)

Put a video card and USB card in the PCI slots definately.
I would put a Radeon Mac Edition or 7000 card in it. Forget using a 9200 Radeon PCI card (I have one and it doesn't play well with OS 9)
The USB card will give you a much better mouse and printer, etc.... connections. You can add a powered USB Hub for more add-on toys.

The Gforce cards are ok but I've always had better luck with Radeon and they are plentiful on eBay.

Max the RAM with two 64MB sticks of RAM.

Get all of the logic board add-ons like the A/V input output stuff. The TV Tuner for sure and there is also a video mirroring monitor port you can add. (uses the video-out port on the board) You should be able to run four monitors with that set-up. (2 morrored with internal video in the middle and 2 landscaped with PCI video on each side)

Add a CD-RW or combo drive. Since the 64/6500's have both SCSI and IDE you can use a SCSI hard drive and use the IDE for a newer DVD/CD-RW drive. Maybe even a DVD burner but the Mac may not have enough "oomph" to burn DVD blanks without problems.

Re:max out my 6500? - 2007/03/02 23:48 Go to the 6400zone and check out advice and articles there for 6400 , 6500 , similar other models etc. I have a 6500 that I upgraded to a G3 400 , 40 Gb 7200 RPM IDE HD, max 128 mb memory as well as a 16mb video card and OS9.1 which ran really well with the idea of using this computer as an analogue to digital video machine , but I could not for the life of me get it to decode analogue video properly through the on board decoder card. Only way was to pull the G3 card and a few other small adjustments but the video results were not very good, just stuck the G3 back in and use my G4 dual MDD to convert all my tapes to digital.Still a good machine and used now as a FAX machine and file server. Pity I can't use OSX on it ( well you can but it runs waaaay slow ). AS KM says all the parts you are after are now pretty cheap. Stewie.

Re:max out my 6500? - 2007/03/03 08:41 Sorry I couldn't get back friday, work got busy. I have a 6400/200 machine fully loaded with tv tuner, A/V capture card, 136meg of memory, 40 gig hard drive, dual USB pci card and a dual firewire pci card.

I was using this to do website development up untill 2 years ago when I go my G4 iMac.

The first thing I'd do is up the memory, 136meg is as far as you can go with this machine. Then like Krow says on eveything else.
