Re:Powermac 7500 - 2007/01/18 22:23 Adding an internal DVD or DVD-R would cost way too much because the 7500 is all SCSI as mentioned. And to watch DVD's on a 7500 you would easily have to spend over $50 on CPU, RAM, video card, etc...

CD-R/RW is no problem as mentioned. I have had good luck with Yamaha brand burners and Adaptec's Toast (now Roxio Toast) and you can find old used Toast CD's free or cheap.

The nice thing about the older Macs like yours is you can build them up with all kinds of goodies fairly cheap. Extremely cheap compared to what those parts cost when they and the 7500 was new !

A G3 card would help a lot. There are plenty on eBay and you should be able to get a 3-400MHz G3 card for less than $20 and is well worth it if you plan on keeping the Mac for long.

I would look for a used USB card on eBay or LEM's Swaplist that was guaranteed to work in an older Mac. (USB 1 only, not USB 2.0 cards)

Play around with the 7500 and save your money for a B&W G3 which are selling for about $20+ now and some have DVD-ROMs built in or can be added. And the B&W G3 will run OS X very well and is sooooo much better than OS 8 or 9.

Re:Powermac 7500 - 2007/01/21 14:14 Thanks for all the help. Its here now and iv cracked it open and the SCSI looks a lot like ide unless the old owner has done something.
The bad thing is no vga port and i thought i could pop a video card in(pci) and it would work but no so im on the look out of an converter tomorrow.

50 pin SCSI cables do look like IDE but wider. It is SCSI unless there is an ATI/IDE PCI card attached to the cables. There is no other way to get IDE on that Mac. There is also 68 & 80 pin SCSI, but those are generally for servers and not desktops.

All the older Macs up to the B&W G3 had Mac video connectors but an adapter should work fine with about any monitor.

What did you plan on using the Mac for ?

I have lots of old parts lying around and may be able to help you get it doing what you want. Leave me a message and we can work something out.

Browsing in OS 9 can be a problem sometimes. The only browser still being updated is iCab and usually works well. Another option is teh Wamcom build of Mozilla but I don't think it's still being developed so you may have some problems with various websites.

The only way to surf is with OS X in my opinion. That's why I mentioned getting something newer like a B&W G3 which can run OS 8.5.1 up to the most current OS 10 flavor. Watch for the Blue G3's around $20 or less sometimes and they use cheaper IDE drives and PC100/133 RAM.

I always watch the local eBay Apple auctions (search with your zip code) and usually you can pick up the stuff cheap and avoid shipping costs which can make a big difference in total costs.
