2nd.Gen iPod-20GB. - 2006/12/22 01:23 I have this 2nd. Gen. iPod that I would like to give to my future son-in-law for Christmas, I just wiped it clean because it had belonged to my grandson at one point. It now has 18.37 GB, my problem is that I can't figure out how to listen to it in my car now, before I give it to him What do I need to be able to hear what has been downloaded into it. I went and bought a firewire cable so that I could get iTunes to recognize it and perform that cleaning out process, I also have a firewire home adapter + a car charger.
My daughters new husband to be would be using it mostly in his truck, he can't wait to get one, he's like a Big kid in a candy store. He wants to download Pod casts to it, mostly NPR stuff like Praire Home Companion and other news.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks !

Re:2nd.Gen iPod-20GB. - 2006/12/22 08:46 Unless you have a fairly new car stereo with an available miniplug, you'll have to do one of two things: either get a radio-transmitter or cassette adapter for the iPod, or buy and install a new car stereo with the proper plug. I can tell you that the transmitter is not the ideal solution, although it will do if your finances are limited. The more crowded the FM band is in your area, the worse the transmitter is. I've never tried or seen in use a cassette adapter. My son had a new radio put into his car, and he's happy as can be with that arrangement. But, again, that's pretty expensive.

Re:2nd.Gen iPod-20GB. - 2006/12/22 09:08 Cacicedo did an excellent job of answering your question as well, but this is addressed in depth in the iPod Q&A.

Refer to:

How can I connect my iPod to my car stereo?

What aftermarket car stereos are designed for use with the iPod?

I hope this is helpful.

Cheers,

Re:2nd.Gen iPod-20GB. - 2006/12/22 12:09 First off I want to thank bkyle for giving me a chance to use the forum here.
Ken ( my F.S.in-law ), bought, last year a brand new Toyota truck, he's away right now so I can not find out if he has a miniplug built in. You speak of the radio transmitter, well he and my family all live in a very remote area of Cold Spring, N.Y., and he only travels in remote areas, he's an Organic farmer by trade ! so this might work, and I happen to have one of those Griffin transmitters that I got brand new last year. Now does that mini plug that's on the cassette, does that fit into the top where normally the earphones go ?, 'cause if this is the case then both of these ideas would work. Thanks so much.
I might add here too that all my family except for Ken have Macs. He has a PC, and I believe he only has windows 2000 installed on it - would this 2nd. Gen. iPod work on his computer ?, could he download iTunes music and podcasts to it alright ?, being that this iPod no longer has the CD that came with it, I'm very sceptical.
