Powerbook SlowDown Pleez help - 2006/12/10 18:44 Ok so i bought my uncles old tibook (onyx i think), it is over 5 years old, and has a 667 mhz processor. i'm running os x tiger, with all the latest updates, i have 1 GB od sdram, and i have a 44 gb hd which is only half full, and everything works great, or at least everything was working great, usually the computer has worked faster than i would have ever expected a computer of it's age to run, but now it's runnig VERY slow, like 5-8 times slower than usual, and whenever i have to type in my password, it takes up to 3 minutes before accepting it and moving on, in which time i of course get the annoying rainbow pinwheel.
usually once i'm able to log in, if i relaunch the finder a few times before i do anything it works better, but only if i run only a few programs at a time. which is weird cuz i usually keep everything running and it works great.
i dont know if this has anything to do with it but when i log in it always brings up this error about not being able to start the transport monitor cuz of something involving a "shared library error" and then it says something about hot sync.
Somebody please help me
i don't understand why it all of a sudden my amazing computer slowed down.
Thanks

Re:Powerbook SlowDown Pleez help - 2006/12/10 22:11 The hot sync thing sounds like you have the Palm syncing software installed. Do a search for Palm and see what comes up. If it's software you never use, dump it. The slowdown may be connected to the computer's searching for the shared library, and if you delete the software, or if you remove it from your startup apps, that will stop. To remove it from the startup apps, go to the Accounts Control Pane, then to the Log in Items option, and deselect the hotsync item.

Two more things to do: first, start up from the installation CD, which you can do by holding down the C key as you reboot. When you get to the first screen where you can choose one of the menu bar items, to to the File menu and select Disk Utility. Once Disk Utility opens, select the icon for the HD, and first run the repair permissions option and then run the repair disk option. You can use the Disk Utility app thats in your Applications/Utilities folder to repair permissions, but to repair the HD itself you can't be booted from the HD. I would also urge you to purchase a good disk utility, the best probably being this one, and to use it if you ever have the problem you're describing.

Re:Powerbook SlowDown Pleez help - 2006/12/11 17:03 hey thanks, i'll try repairing the permissions, as for all the palm crap, i'm still deciding what to do, i use it alot but lately i've been using isync. as for disk warrior, i think i already own it so if all else fails i'll try that.
thank you so much

Re:Powerbook SlowDown Pleez help - 2006/12/17 18:35 What crashed it? Repairing permissions? repairing the drive with the Apple software? DiskWarrior?

Re:Powerbook SlowDown Pleez help - 2006/12/18 23:12 Repairing Disk permissions. I have no idea how, but oh well, it kind of feels like getting a new computer lol.
I'm just glad it works again.
I use my computer a lot in yearbook and a few other classes so it's nice to have it up again :)
