Can't open SCSI issue with Powermac 9500 - 2006/11/01 21:05Hello,
Machine is a Powermac 9500 with 512 MB RAM with a XLR8 Machspeed Carrier ZIF G3 card.
After installing OS 9.1, I attempted to install OSX Tiger with CDs. Unfortunately, after the first reboot, I get the "Can't open SCSI..." message.
What does this mean and how do I go about remedying this issue? The hard drive and CD-Rom drive on the 9500 are both running from the onboard SCSI connector. All terminations are in order...last device in chain (Hard drive) is terminated.
Thanks for any help in this matter.

Re:Can't open SCSI issue with Powermac 9500 - 2006/11/02 18:48First issue is probably a firmware update. How big/fast is the SCSI hard drive ? It may be too small or slow for OSX. Stewie

Re:Can't open SCSI issue with Powermac 9500 - 2006/11/05 22:54Hello,
Where exactly could I get a firmware update compatable with the Powermac 9500/132? The hard drive is an IBM 4 gig SCSI. Partitioned 311 MB for OS9/Xpostfacto and the rest for OSX. Hard drive space is not an issue as I have successfully employed this configuration in my Beige G3s without incident (onboard SCSI and IDE drives).

Re:Can't open SCSI issue with Powermac 9500 - 2006/11/06 22:26This is a bit of a mystery. I would post your query on MacGurus site in their SCSI section as they are pretty up on all things SCSI although they reccomend SATA and New World machines now . HTH , Stewie. Edit : You have got the drives terminated , connected properly and assigned a correct ID to the drive as well havent you ? Just a thought.

Re:Can't open SCSI issue with Powermac 9500 - 2006/11/09 09:42There is no firmware update for your 9500 that is going to help. I doubt there are any firmware updates for the 9500 at all.
Your problem is SCSI termination probably. OS X is very very picky about SCSI issues. I have tried to install OS X on several pre-G3 SCSI Macs (G3 upgraded) with no luck at all. Using an ATA card always works though on the same Macs.
I would try terminating the CD-ROM and put the drive in the chain before the CD-ROM.
Are you getting OS X installed but won't boot after the install ? Or not getting through the install ?
Another thing I would tryis another version of Xpostfcto. I've had luck with some versions and no luck at all with others.
You could also try installing 10.2 oe 10.3 insead. OS X is getting more and more anti-SCSI with each version released.
