Problems loading OS on Powermac 9500 - 2006/10/17 21:19 Hello,

I have a Powermac 9500/132 with around 576 MB of RAM, a 4 Gig SCSI hard drive, and the stock CD-ROM drive. For some reason, the machine would only boot my OS 8.5 disc about 10% of the way before it stops going any further. After about 20 minutes, I had to pull the power plug from the power supply to shut the machine off.

Just in case, I tested the OS 8.5 disc on a Powermac 7200 and it booted and installed the OS without any incident. Also, I switched the PM 7200's CD-ROm drive to the PM9500 and tried booting the OS 8.5 disc...and it froze just like before?

What possible issues should I be looking for and how should I go about troubleshooting/solving this problem?

Thanks to anyone for any help in this matter.

Re:Problems loading OS on Powermac 9500 - 2006/10/19 04:05 First thing I would do is check to make sure your CPU daughtercard is seated properly. Then check your RAM by pulling all RAM but what you need to boot the Mac.

32 or 64MB would be enough to boot OS 8.5 and if that works you can add RAM until you find the bad stick(s).

Re:Problems loading OS on Powermac 9500 - 2006/10/20 13:22 Hello,

Thank you for your help. It turns out that not too long after I posted that, I had problems booting OS 8.5 on my 7200 as well. Turns out the System disc was in the process of going bad. After obtaining a replacement, it booted fine.

Thank you!

Re:Problems loading OS on Powermac 9500 - 2006/10/20 19:48 Good to hear you got the problem sorted out. Sometimes the problem can be the obvious but I overlook it.

I have heard of burning a copy of a questionable install CD and having luck using the copy so you may try making a copy of the Apple CD for future use. And making your own personal use back-up copy of your OS CD is perfectly legal to do.
