Re:Possible Mods/Upgrades for B&W G3 - 2006/06/18 02:08 There is one 66MHz PCI slot for video and three 33MHz PCI slots for misc. add-ons.

I'll suggest the ATI 9200 card for PCI Macs too. I have one in my B&W G4.

An ATA133 card or SATA card would be a good addition, or even a fast SCSI card. The B&W IDE controllers were slow and the rev. 1 boards have a lousy controller. See the G3Zone's B&W section for more info on B&W IDE controllers and the problems with rev. 1 boards.

Re:Possible Mods/Upgrades for B&W G3 - 2006/06/18 17:48 The Blue & White only has 4 PCI slots, one of which is for for the graphics card. My set up is like this:

slot 1: ATI 9200 Mac Edition 128MB PCI Card

Slot 2: OrangePC 660 Compatibility card with an AMD K6 III 450Mhz Processor & 256MB's of RAM

Slot 3: Apple/Adaptec AH-2940U2B Ultra Wide SCSI LVD Card

Slot 4: Sonnet Allegro 2.0 USB Card

The OrangePC 660 card was the last PC Compatibility card made, and is old technology. Originally it was designed for Windows 98 and Windows NT. It will run Windows Me, and maybe Windows 2000, but I seriously doubt it can handle XP. The card is limited to a max RAM of 2x128MB PC100 RAM. It has built in 4MB's of video, which cannot not be bypassed to use the Mac's video. And is limited to a maximum of 2x2GB's containers located on the Mac's hard drive. I have heard that it is possible to bypass this and use a dedicated harddrive, but I have been unable to get the card to recognize more than 1 or 2 GB's that way. Also the best processor it will recognize is the AMD K6 III 450Mhz processor, (AMD never massed produced the K6 III 500Mhz processor). Though you can run the 550Mhz K6 II, though it is slower than the K6 III. Oh, and the cards are a bit difficult to find and tend to sell for quite a bit when they do show up on eBay. Though if you do manage to get one, make sure you get the cable and software with it, as Orange Micro is no longer in business so their website has been removed and the software is no longer available for download.

Hope that helps

Ken
