Discussion Q&A - Post-iTV Mac mini? - 2006/10/08 20:22 Do you think Apple will continue to offer the Mac mini after the introduction of the product codenamed "iTV"? Why or why not?

Re:Discussion Q&A - Post-iTV Mac mini? - 2006/10/09 01:41 Duh. Of course Apple still will have the Mac mini. Just because you can hook the Mac mini to a TV does not mean that TV is the only thing you can use it for. Apple still needs a cheap entry level Mac, and the Mac mini is the ticket for that market.

Re:Discussion Q&A - Post-iTV Mac mini? - 2006/10/09 11:01 i am not really sure what the itv is. does it run mac os x or is it just receiving info from another mac? if it runs mac os x and has some internal storage, could you hook up a hd to it? if so, it pretty much is the mac mini. i do not really know why you would need both.

Re:Discussion Q&A - Post-iTV Mac mini? - 2006/10/09 12:48 I bought a Mac mini to hold movies and music and have it connected to my television. I do not really see much point to the iTV. It might be nice to be able to wirelessly stream movies from your computer to your iTV/television combo, but it's not really a big advantage compared to just connecting the Mac mini to the TV with a cable.

iTV costs less, but for that price, I cannot imagine that it would have a hard drive, and if it does not have a hard drive, then you still need a computer to manage and store your content. I would rather spend a little extra for the mini, so I hope Apple does not discontinue it. - Mike

Re:Discussion Q&A - Post-iTV Mac mini? - 2006/10/09 16:32 What if the iTV were a bit like TiVo, except running on a discreetly in the background and fully remote-controllable version of OS X instead of Linux, which is what TiVo uses? I don't understand why a US$300 price would preclude its having a HD. Again, consider the TiVo, with fairly large (currently maxed at 250 GB, I think) HDs.

Re:Discussion Q&A - Post-iTV Mac mini? - 2006/10/09 19:39 Good point, Cacicedo. It has been a long time since I priced a Tivo. I am not interested in paying a monthly fee, and last time I checked that is how they subsidized the hardware cost. If iTV does have a hard drive though, and it costs US$300, what do you think would keep you from just using it as a Mac? Maybe the Mac mini is on the way out, no? - Mike
