G3 iBook 600 - What OS? - 2009/10/12 16:18Hi guys, pretty new to this but I've got a question for you...
I've had a G3 iBook 600 since 2002, great machine that's never let me down but I've recently put a bigger HDD in. HDD works great but I've lost the original OS install discs. I seem to recall that it came with an OS9 disc and and OSX upgrade... what do I need to find/buy to put OSX back on my machine now its got nothing on it?
Cheers!
Ian.

Re:G3 iBook 600 - What OS? - 2009/10/12 18:42Hi, Can't say for certain but I think your computer may of had OS 10.2 Jaguar and OS 9.2 installed when new. Depending on how much memory you have I would recommend installing 10.3 Panther or 10.4 Tiger instead. These would allow you to use a more modern browser. Ralph

Re:G3 iBook 600 - What OS? - 2009/10/12 20:03Your iBook will run up to OS 10.4 but you should put as much RAM in it as you can afford. Max it out if possible.
When buying an OS X disk you want to get the Retail OS X install disk and they are black. The machine specific disks will usually only work on the machine it was bundled with and your iBook would have a very early version of OS X (OS 10.1) if any included at the time of sale. You want to get at least OS 10.2 and the later the better for the greatest software compatibility.
