iBook 300 Tangerine Hard Drive - 2008/03/13 13:29 Hi

I have a tangerine iBook 300 model. Unfortunately my hard drive is a pathetic 3gb HD. I was wondering, what interface is the hard drive? Just plain old IDE? Have the interfaces changed much over the years? I would like to upgrade to something more like 80gb. Could I use pretty much any laptop harddrive pulled from a PC or on eBay or something?

I am rather uninformed when it comes to modern computer hardware.

Re:iBook 300 Tangerine Hard Drive - 2008/03/13 14:24 We had a nice thread going re: a FireWire PowerBook with the same conundrum.

If you're already running OS X, you're in good shape to begin with upgrading the HDD; you've applied the 4.1.7 firmware which should have raised the ceiling to 120 GB. If not, and you haven't flashed the firmware yet, see Apple Support Document #86117 for a link to the update.

You can then use any PATA/EIDE 2.5" drive up to 120 GB. You'll probably want one with an 8 MB or larger cache for better response time, but keep the RPM low (5400) to reduce potential heat hazards. Transfer speed should be ATA-4 or better (ATA/66).
