problem with RAM on G4 - 2007/10/24 12:51I noticed recently that my powerbook g4 doesn't recognize memory from lower mem. slot. I tried changing memory cards on upper slot and they both work, and even g4 recognizes memory from both slots after pluging memory out and in. To be more confusing my g4 even only with memory on lower slot, so everything works fine, but not together. I think this started to happen after installing security update 2007 - 007. Does anyone have any idea what should I do?

Re:problem with RAM on G4 - 2007/10/24 23:17That's no software problem. It's a hardware fault in the late G4s.
Apple offers a logic board repair for that. Follow the advice here.
Might also check the RAM itself. Some supposedly "compatible" memory actually isn't. You should use RAM from sources that test memory to Apple's strict QC standards.

Re:problem with RAM on G4 - 2007/10/25 04:32Thanks for the response Nate.
I forgot to mention that my g4 worked fine for more than year with these two memory cards (512+1024) and it's a 1,33GHz, 15" G4 so it's not included in Apple logic board repair program. It's hard for me to accept that this is a hardware problem because of the fact that computer works fine with memory only in lower slot but it doesn't recognize memory in lower slot when cards are in both slots.
Anyway I'll try fixing this somehow and keep posting in case someone else confronts with same problem.

Re:problem with RAM on G4 - 2007/10/26 12:04If it has something to do with the Security Update, I'd suggest visiting MacFixIt.com as I believe they have a free tutorial for downgrading updates and systems. Might be worth a try...
Also, very important from an Apple Care tech - these powerbooks are too sensitive for any brand other than Samsung manufactured. Samsung makes the stock Apple RAM (or did then anyway) and they also have a couple of different brand names they sell under.
However, I have a 1.25ghz PB G4 and it was not in the Apple recall either, but that doesn't mean that it didn't have the exact same problem. Luckily I had Apple Care because they ended up replacing the logic board and RAM twice.
Also, mine ran fine for about 2 years from purchase (graphics & video intensive use) before it started having problems.

Re:problem with RAM on G4 - 2007/11/08 23:41To test the Ram you can also download a couple of little utilities that rigorously test the Ram chips- Rember and Memtest. It takes quite a while though . Stewie
