It powers up, screen lights up and all, but just stays on a grey screen. no folder with "?" and mac face, nothing but Grey....

Re:so... whats the problem? - 2007/05/03 18:51Try hooking up an external monitor first to see what you get.
There may be a problem with the LCD. Does it sound like the drive is spinning ? DC door eject ?
The iBooks have a common video problem where the solder joints for the video chip on the logicboard get loose. Google for iBook Video shim and you'll find more info on an easy fix if that's the problem.

You can't really delete your OS while using it. But the folder icon with the question mark indicates the Mac cannot find a valid system folder. This could be caused by many things. A reinstall of the OS may be needed but not necessarily.
If you have an OS install boot CD or DVD try booting that and see if your hard drive is ok by verifying the disk and repairing permissions in the Utilities while booted from CD. If your hard drive isn't showing up it may have died and that would show the question mark folder. If you have Diskwarrior I would boot from that CD and see what you find also.

More info would help with a solution and it's probably best to start a new thread also.
What Mac is it ? What OS ?
Can you hear the hard drive spinning or making any noise ?
