G3 266 Powerbook - 2007/09/20 15:53 I am currently running Mac OS 10.1

What is the maximum Mac OS that this machine can comfortably cope with and how hard is it to change the PRAM battery in this machine ?

Re:G3 266 Powerbook - 2007/09/20 17:41 The Wallstreet 266MHz can run up to OS 10.2.8 without any special software. It can run OS 10.3 or 10.4 using Xpostfacto freeware.

You would definitely be better off using OS 10.2 or even 10.3 over the version you are using. My choice would be 10.2 Jaguar because you can do a straight install since it's officially supported. OS 10.3 Panther if you feel like playing with the install a little and it will run a little faster than with the previous OS. And more software is available for 10.3 than 10.2.

I would also suggest a minimum of 256MB of RAM too. (more is always better) The PRAM battery is not easy to get to but can be done fairly easy. Just follow the instructions closely and keep track of the screws.

For a take-apart guide check here.

Re:G3 266 Powerbook - 2007/09/20 21:14 Thanks for the advice.

Are there any "clone" PRAM batteries that can be used to reduce the cost of replacement ?

Those are old odd-ball batteries and you may have to get whatever you can find. Anything with the correct voltage will work but may not fit inside the case.

Places like Powerbook Medic would have them and possibly OWC or some other Mac parts retailer. I wouldn't get it from Apple if that's what you were thinking of doing. I'd hate to ask what Apple would want for one.

eBay has some sellers with new PRAM batteries but make sure it has a fairly recent date on it.

Hardest lesson learned ever too maybe ;-)

I had to learn the hard way that laptops have 10,000,000 different sized screws and every screw fits in a specific place. Ok, maybe not that many screws but keep track of where each screw goes and you'll be much happier when you are finished. (and have no left-over screws)
