networking wallstreet and a g4p'book - 2007/07/18 14:46 'k, most know by now i'm still using my trusty ol' wallstreet. and i have (once again, let's hope for better luck this time) purchased a g4. once the new family member arrives, i will need to introduce the siblings to one another and get them chatting.

i have an older linksys router. it is already hardwired to the wallstreet, and set up for wireless. i know the wireless works ok wiht the g4 because i had it working on the one i sent back. so, once i set up file sharing how do i get them to find one another on the router?

also, how do i set up file sharing to encompass the whole HD--the wall street is currently partitioned to six disks, i'll probably partition the g4 as well--and not just the "shared" computer?

thanks in advance for any advice!

Re:networking wallstreet and a g4p'book - 2007/08/03 01:05 If the WallStreet has Jaguar (or better with XPostFacto) and the G4 also has Jaguar or better, it will be much easier to talk to the G4 since both can use SMB via Samba. AppleTalk could be set up, but outside of having a clunky Win2K server on hand, I wouldn't know how to get it going.

Use the Directory Access utility to set up the SMB workgroup and system names. Between the two, the workgroup needs to be the same, but the system names must be different.

Also, turn Windows sharing on (this is off by duh-fault) in Sharing preferences.

Might be wise to patch the router firmware if you also have a Windows box AND an update is available AND the update specifically addresses a security leak (most Linksys updates come as Windows programs unless they offer the raw firmware as a .bin file, which in turn MUST NOT be touched by Stuffit)

Re:networking wallstreet and a g4p'book - 2007/08/03 09:58 Does the Wallstreet have X installed, or is it still on 9?
