Best superdrive to upgrade to for a 12in powerbook - 2007/05/02 22:11 I have a 12in 1g processor powerbook. What would be the best superdrive to upgrade to for this machine? I'm looking to get the very best one I can get, as I plan to max this machine out and sell it. My combo drive ate it recently. I also plan to max out the ram to 1g and the hd to an 80.

Re:Best superdrive to upgrade to for a 12in powerb - 2007/05/03 07:25 You may want to do some sales research before dumping a lot of cash into upgrades because you may not get the extra $$ back when you sell it. It will sell for more than as is but not always more than what you added to the Mac. Look for 1GB 12" PB's with a Superdrive, 1GB RAM and an 80GB drive to see what you'll get for it.

I think all the Superdrive PB's used Matsushita drives. OWC sells Mercury Superdrives but I never had any experience with that brand. OWC is one of the better places to get Mac parts though.

The items you want to max your PB out with are going to add up.

Superdrive $100+/-
1GB RAM 100+/-
80GB Drive 75-100+

If you buy used you can save some money and get that down to about $200+/- maybe. I really doubt you would get $300 more for the PB with the upgrades over what it would sell for now. I would only replace what needs replaced and sell it.

Re:Best superdrive to upgrade to for a 12in powerb - 2007/05/04 21:12 probably good advice krow. I just bought an older superdrive from ebay for $40 and can sell it for at least that if I decide to buy a dual layer drive. as far as 80g hd's go, they seem to be the most expensive upgrade sine I have seen very few on ebay. RAM runs about $80 to $110 for the 1g chip. This whole thing started because my combo drive bit the dust and I figured since I'm doing a very lengthy repair by replacing the opti drive, I might as well upgrade everything else while I'm at it. I will do some research and see what the maxed version of my machine is going for.
