Firmware needed ? - 2007/01/21 16:05 where do I start...... I have a 366 MHz.,power pc (M7716LL/A) iBook
I also have 2 operating systems on here & I want to take one of them off- O.S. 9.2.2. , however this is not as big of a concern as a faded out short name which I don't want on this computer, so in order to get rid of this, I want to re-install Mac O.S.-X, But - upon reading the in-stall cd, I found that I may need firmware., so needless to say I went to the website that has this for this iBook, but it turned out that it was for the O.S. 9.2.2 which I want removed anyway.
Can anyone help me with this. I'm not sure if I should just put in the first disk and select "archive & install" or should I just go over to the "blue apple" and update the system software on O.S.-X ?

Re:Firmware needed ? - 2007/01/26 01:03 So the collector of all things ancient returns....

Your 366 MHz iBook will need a firmware update if you plan on running 10.2.x or 10.3.x for any length of time, and you'll need OS 9 to apply this upgrade. Fortunately, being ROM code, the upgrade is permanent once installed; thus you can safely send OS 9 to The Great Beyond when you have installed the upgrade.

Apple has a link to the iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7 via Apple KB Article number 86117.

Here's what you do:

1. Start in OS 9
2. Download the update package.
3. If your browser does not automatically expand and mount the update on the Desktop, then expand and mount it from wherever you saved it.
4. Run the updater program. If a message says your iBook is already up to date, stop here and proceed with a clean install of OS X ("Erase and install").
5. If your firmware needs the update, read the instructions (they're similar to what I'm covering here), and then click Shut Down
6. Hold the Command key while pressing and then holding the Power button. Let go when you start to hear a long tone.

*A progress bar should start filling if this step was executed correctly; if not. you'll get a message saying that the update did not run and then go back to Step 4 or 5. When the bar is full, the iBook restarts itself. At this time, some of ypur preferences may be reset, as the computer's parameter RAM (PRAM) has been cleared and new default preferences have been loaded.

7. A message will say that your firmware is now up to 4.1.7. Click OK. then start a clean install of OS X.

10.3.9 is the last version of X officially supported on clamshell iBooks without FireWire. These iBooks must also be upgraded with maximum RAM (320 MB via 1 256 MB SODIMM+64 MB onboard; older models may be capped at 288 MB).

It is my pleasure to serve you once again. Good luck,

Nate
