Re:Problematic iMac G5 20" 1.8ghz - 2009/08/03 18:23 I can guarantee it's not malware. That would be a virus and there are NO Mac viruses. Not yet anyway....

The obvious first thought would be a failing hard drive since it worked ok for a few days after the re-install. It may be failing and still pass the Disk Utility verify/repair process. Zeroing the data is a good idea and may find problems you didn't see before.

If you have another drive you can try I would install that and install the OS again. There are plenty of guides for installing components on your iMac. Check the Q&A section here for links. If you don't have an extra drive lying around (I assume everyone does because I do) borrow one from a friend or buy the cheapest one you can find to see what happens.

An external Firewire drive will work too since your G5 is a PPC and will boot from Firewire. You could install the OS on the external drive and run the iMac from that. Make sure it's an Oxford Chipset Firewire enclosure to be 100% problem free. USB is not bootable on your iMac so it has to be Firewire.

Also, If you have a hardware test disk I would run that, if not you could also take the iMac into an Apple Store to have one of the Genius' look at it. Make an appointment first and they will look at it for free. If you are not close to an Apple store call your local Mac retailer and they will usually diagnose it for free.

But I would try a different hard drive first.
