wiping system and reinstalling - 2009/06/23 08:22 Hi, I have a friend whose computer is having major probs, and I'd like to totally wipe his computer clean and reinstall tiger with an install disk. How do I go about wiping his computer clean?

Thanks,
istari

Re:wiping system and reinstalling - 2009/06/23 17:33 First up make sure the Tiger disc is a black coloured full retail install DVD and not a silver grey system restore disc which will generally work with the machine it was released with only.

If it is the black disc and his machine meets Tiger minimum specifications, pop the disc in, reboot and after the chime hold down 'C' until the gear wheel starts, select language and opt for a clean install.

Before installing the software, it may be wise to go to Utilities after booting, and run Repair Disc from Disk Utility there and make sure evreything is okay.

Re:wiping system and reinstalling - 2009/06/25 22:17 I tried to do a Repair disk, but it wouldn't let me. When I selected the HD, all I could do was repair permissions. verify disk and repair disk were both grayed out.

I did go ahead and wipe and reinstall system. then went to disk utility, and it still would not let me select verify disk or repair disk.

I'm hoping it's okay otherwise.

You can only repair the disk from the Disk Utility on the Install DVD while booted from the DVD. The OS will not let you verify or repair the system boot disk while running from it.

Alternatively you can and should verify/repair permissions only from the running OS and not the install disk. The install disk will usually be an older version of the OS due to software updates so avoid using it for permissions repairing.

Re:wiping system and reinstalling - 2009/06/26 17:11 Boot from your disk by holding down 'C;' immediately after the chimes.

Go to utilities in the menu bar, select Disk Utility and run Repair Drive from there. You cannot run Repair Drive whilst you are booted from it.

Install Tiger and then update using Software Update. At some stage Disk Utility is updated so as advised by Krowmagnum, do not use Repair Permissions from the install disc.
