DOS games on imac g3 - 2009/05/23 14:25 has anyone found a reliable emulator to enable the imac g3 to play games written for DOS mode? I have a couple golden oldies that I'd love to have access to again. What games or programs in DOS are you all still using? Thanks.

Re:DOS games on imac g3 - 2009/05/23 17:15 No emulators are fast enough for games sadly. They are just not worth the money. VirtualPC 7 was about the fastest but it is awful slow. Best solution is to look for a cheap Dell P4 laptop such as a D640 which are quite cheap.

Re:DOS games on imac g3 - 2009/05/27 12:40 thanks for that insight. I wonder if you've tried RealPC? I just found a disc on ebay for very cheap, so I bought it just to experiment. It hasn't arrived yet, but when it does and I get it up and running, I'll post a review.

Re:DOS games on imac g3 - 2009/05/28 16:49 In particular meant VirtualPC and have tried others with absolutely no success even with a G4 1.25DP machine and 2GB memory.

Re:DOS games on imac g3 - 2009/07/14 13:09 RealPC works! For the dos "game" I'm most interested in (the best piece of math educational software I've come across -- MathExplorer) is works rather poorly, though. I've experimented with cycles and frameskips and can't find a sweet spot that allows the mouse to move smoothly and responsively. Otherwise it is functional. If by any chance someone reads this who understands these things better than I do, I would very much appreciate hearing any ideas about optimization.

Re:DOS games on imac g3 - 2009/07/14 16:51 When using VirtualPC found it best to always set the memory top the minimum 256MB, and it was still slow alas.

Good luck.
