Connecting 2 Macs - 2009/02/17 17:28 I'm trying to network 2 Macs. One is an eMac800 OS10.4 and the other is an iMac G5 OS10.5. I have them connected with a cross-over ethernet cable and have configured both according to Mac OS Bible.
When I try to connect via the Network I keep getting the message,
"Invalid use name and password" yet I have indicated no password in the necessary boxes because I have no security problem. I have set all necessary info in the System Preferences under "Accounts" on both computers. Can some one walk me through this to find out why I keep getting this "Invalid password" message. Thanks, Tex Wilson

Re:Connecting 2 Macs - 2009/02/17 19:05 When you installed the OS on the two computers, you created a username and a password. The username will be the same as your home user name. The password will be something you created. Now, if you don't remember the password(s) (they can be the same across different computers), you can reset the password. Boot into your OS installation disk, then when you get a chance to do so, go tot he File menu and select Reset Password (or something like that--it'll be obvious what the option should be). When you try to connect the two computers, that's the password you will use. Incidentally, if you save the password into your keychain, you'll connect automatically. One more thing--nowadays, you don't need crossover cables because the ethernet ports have an automatic function that configures the connection.

Re:Connecting 2 Macs - 2009/02/17 19:16 Thanks for the info, however I don't have the startup disks except for the eMac800 which is for OSX.2 and I've up graded by downloading
the OS10.4. Plus no disks for the iMacG5. Guess I didn't realize we don't need a crossover cable for the newer ethernet. All I want to do is
take all the info from the eMac and transfer it to the newer iMac.

Re:Connecting 2 Macs - 2009/02/17 21:55 Another option is using a Firewire cable (better and easier in my opinion) in Target Disk Mode:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

This will make the target Mac (either) into an external hard drive on the 2nd Mac. You can then copy anything from it you want from one to the other.

Re:Connecting 2 Macs - 2009/02/18 11:50 krowmagnum, Thanks a million for the tip of using firewire connection for the 2 Macs. I'm approaching 80 and upgrading my computer, I continue to upgrade my mind. It's great to have this EveryMac Forum.
Thanks again, Tex Wilson http://www.texwilson.com

Re:Connecting 2 Macs - 2009/02/18 21:55 Target disk will work fine to move stuff. Sorry I didn't suggest that in the first place!
