Re:Updating Imac 400 SE - 2009/01/01 14:59 On-line video is going to be sluggish on your 400MHz G3 iMac. Probably more so due to your CPU than the video chip but both play a role. The internet video stuff needs more and more computer power as the technology increases.

How much RAM do you have installed ? You should have at least 512MB.

Make sure your browser cache is emptied frequently and you should avoid running many browser plugins. And for Yahoo or similar pages with flash ads you could try installing a flash ad blocker plug-in to Firefox to stop the flash ads from eating up your CPU power.

You could try another browser like Opera that may use less resources. Here is a page with some options:

You cannot upgrade your CPU or Video in the iMac so it may be time for a newer Mac. I have found that a minimum of 733MHz G4 is needed to handle most internet stuff but that will still choke on many sites.

My 867MHz G4 with 1.5GB of RAM does ok but some times it's even too slow on some web sites.

You can always try cleaning up your OS with an archive and install of a fresh OS. Sometimes that can make a big difference but don't expect a lot from your old iMac.
