change out cpu - 2009/09/15 18:11I currently have a powermac g4 dp500. I think my cpu or mobo went out. Can I switch this out for a G4 Power Mac MDD Motherboard w/ Dual 867 Mhz CPUs ? This is my first mac. Thanks for the input.

Re:change out cpu - 2009/09/17 07:39No, unfortunately the Mac boards are pretty much specific to each model and revision. See my response to your latest posting.
Most Mac G4 CPUs can be swapped with other "some" models but there is a limit to which CPUs will work with which G4 models. The DP500 is limited to only the "AGP model" G4's. That does not include all G4's with AGP graphics though.
The prices on the late model G4's are getting much lower and if you need more power your best option is to replace the G4 with a newer model. I would suggest at least an 867MHz or faster G4 and if you don't use apps that utilize the 2nd CPU (most apps don't) then don't buy a DP G4, get the fasted SP G4 you can afford.
