Issues Installing OS 10.3 Panther on a G4 - 2009/06/22 12:33 I have a Digital Audio G4 533mhz dual with 1.5 gb ram and a 9GB drive that was running OS 9.3 and just bought Panther 10.3 to do a complete install and ran into some problems. Looking at the install tips from this web site and from what I've seen on Apple's site it should have been an easy process and I'm stuck.

My plan was to not upgrade but do a new install over 9.3 and that's where the problem starts. when running the install CD I check through each step and at step 4 (?) where you select the drive or location to install OS 10.3 the current drive icon shows witgh a red dot and exclamation point (!), Unable to install message and that the drive partition must be smaller than 7gb size. also that OS 10.x must be on the drive to upgrade. I see that the next step (5) is select the type of install, fulll or upgrade.

So I decide to add a spare 20GB drive I have laying around and setup a smaller partition and get the same message. During each of these I run the disk verify/repair tool to make sure the drive is ok. Both drives check out.

I decide to partition my original drive as 2 x 4.4Gb drives, disk verify and try installing again. Similar error, red dot ! and message that earlier verison of OS 10 must be already installed to upgrade. I know that re-partitioning my orgial drive will wipe out whatever OS 9.3 is on the drive and I can reinstall if needed. What do I need to do to get the system to let me install Panther?

Thanks, Jim

Re:Issues Installing OS 10.3 Panther on a G4 - 2009/06/22 23:14 Sounds like you got an upgrade disk and not a full install retail OS 10.3 disk set.

Did you get 3 disks for installing Panther ?

What does the disk look like and have printed on it ?

And you should get a larger drive than the 9GB drive you are using. You can get any 120GB or smaller 3.5" IDE drive for your G4. Especially since you should have 20% free space on the boot drive for the OS to use.

Re:Issues Installing OS 10.3 Panther on a G4 - 2009/06/23 06:53 I got the package with 3 disks, the first disk has OS 10.3 upgarde on it. I've also installed a 2nd drive of 20GB. Shouldn't this install give you the option of upgrade or complete install? The installation stopped at the drive selection and didn't like either drive device so I didn't get to the point where you determinethe type of installation.

any ideas?

Thanks, Jim

Re:Issues Installing OS 10.3 Panther on a G4 - 2009/06/23 17:25 Jim if it is an upgrade disc you would require the previous version, Jaguar OS X.2. Think if you want Panther the black coloured full retail install DVD is the only way to go. If you did buy Jaguar and then upgrade and had problems, have to install both again.

Upgrade discs do not give the option of a new install only the upgrade.

Re:Issues Installing OS 10.3 Panther on a G4 - 2009/06/24 08:09 That's funny because the site I bought the SW from didn't say it was the upgrade. Anyway, I just bought OS 2.0 Jag and I'll see what happens next. Thanks and I'll add updates as thing s happen.

Re:Issues Installing OS 10.3 Panther on a G4 - 2009/06/29 08:40 Latest Update. I ordered a full copy of 10.2, installed it with no issues and upgraded to 10.3 also with no problems. So now I'm offical, just need SW and decide what I'm going to do.

Tahnk All for the help. Lessons learned. Jim
