Third Party Software Unstable? - 2006/05/25 07:04I read on MacFixit about issues with the latest Security update , including startup issues, and third-party software instability. In particular, the updates break MplayerOSX and VLC. They just hang the machine up and it does not respond except to a hard reset.
To fix it, I had to go back to the original install off of the Mini DVD. I even tried to update to 10.4.6 but the behavior came back.
Anyone see anything new about these issues? From what I read on MacFixit, Apple has a broken update on its hands.

Re:Third Party Software Unstable? - 2006/07/11 00:48Yes - I just had a rough time trying to force quit an application I downloaded tonight. Downloaded a game from battery acid games - it loaded and loaded and loaded.... Tried to force quit -tried anything Command Q , even tried the power button - stayed locked up.Locked up as in I could move the curser but could not click on anything, even the dock would not respond.....until.... the machine went into sleep mode. Upon awaking , the force quit menu show itself and alow me to quit the app. This happened twice , same application --- The cure was to completely uninstall the software ( the download -Universal Binary version 1.0.2)
iMac 20" 2Gig 1.5G ram os 10.4.7
I have also had software (used on my b/w g3 900Mhz ) not display correctly on this new machine - It either uses part of the screen (2/3 off to the left) or the depth of field is lessened compaired to the machine listed above ( also using a crt with the g3 )

Re:Third Party Software Unstable? - 2007/02/16 07:27In the same vein I have seen both the inability to force quit but also a spinning color disc that replaces my cursor when using programs associated with iPhoto. In these cases also putting the iMac into sleep mode and then force quit worked.
