Here's the scoop: Apple designed the Mac Pro as a workstation, and as such has given it very specific memory requirements.
Because of the Mac Pro's thermal design, its memory must bear an "Apple-certified" or "Apple-approved" heat spreader. Major memory vendors had a tough time with this initially, but were able to work through the issue within the system's first three months. (Source: Macworld)
Once you get past the thermal specs, you then must determine that the memory meets the correct speed and parity requirements:
- PC2-5300 minimum transfer speed DDR2 (PC2-6400 recommended for '08 models) - Fully Buffered DIMM - ECC - Must be installed in pairs
The big guys have them.
